Support | Seed Cycling

Seed cycling for hormone balance is one of my go-to places to start with folks who need some extra support with hormones. One of the biggest disruptors for hormone balance is stress, which is also one of the biggest experiences we can all relate to. Having tools on hand to support our bodies in the ways we can (like seed cycling for hormones) can help improve health around the things that are often out of our control (stress).

Seed cycling is accessible, affordable and often empowering that we can use our food as medicine. Below are the general guidelines and some of the wisdom behind the power of seeds in supporting hormone health.

Side note: this is beneficial and effective for ALL people, teens just entering hormone shifts, couples trying to conceive and those shifting into menopause. Caution if you have ongoing digestive symptoms, sometimes seeds can aggravate SIBO, IBS or other diagnoses.

Seeds included in cycling:

  • Flax seeds

  • Pumpkin seeds

  • Sunflower seeds

  • Sesame seeds

Optional to include:

  • Fish oil

  • Evening primrose oil

How it works:

  • From day 1 of your cycle (first day of bleeding) consume 1-2 TBSP flax and/or pumpkin seeds daily. Do this until day 14, or so. Option to take fish oil as well.

  • From day 15 until the return of bleeding, consume 1-2 TBSP sunflower and/or sesame seeds. Option to take Evening Primrose Oil as well.

  • Ground is best, but not required for efficacy. Do what works and what makes the seeds accessible to you.

  • If you aren’t cycling for whatever reason, use the moon cycle to insight the seeds. It would be:

    • New moon to full moon consume flax and/or pumpkin seeds

    • Full moon to new moon consume sunflower and/or sesame seeds

    • I also recommend you read Unwinding Irregular Cycles if you are not cycling. Functional hormone testing is also available to uncover the root cause of amenorrhea (lack of menses).

The wisdom:

The seeds listed above have a variety of very beneficial minerals and nutrients that help support the rhythm of sex hormones. Seeds are a great source of fiber that helps the digestive system find balance in processing hormones. The seeds also contain notable levels of zinc, selenium and vitamin E which all play a role in signaling ovulation, balancing estrogen and progesterone levels. Supporting this underlying process is a fantastic way to help improve cycle regularity, ovulation success and decrease painful period cramps, breast tenderness and mood changes that often go along with menstrual cycle symptoms.

If you are having menstrual cycle changes, find a provider that has experience in supporting hormones. Support is available and no one has to live with painful, irregular or symptomatic periods.
